Universe, Spirituality and Fate vs. Destiny

Universe

We term anything beyond our control as the Universe, or Higher Power. Some common slangs that describe something beyond human’s control (used by the Chinese) are such as “老天爺” (Lao Tian Ye; Chinese term for God/Deity) or “天” (Tian; Chinese term for Heaven). In the study of astrology, it represents the forces or energy exhibited by the stars or planets or the moon/sun that can have an impact on us and our environment (1).

Spirituality

One of the many reasons why people study Chinese Metaphysics is to seek one’s spirituality. Spiritualism is a search for something sacred such as the understanding of self (character, capabilities, relationships, self-control, ethics) (2). Engaging in meditation, yoga, religion are some ways an individual can embrace their spirituality. Studies have shown that engaging in spiritual activities could lead to an improved self-esteem, inner peace and a greater sense of gratitude towards life (3).

Fate vs. Destiny

Fate is a phenomenon pre-programmed by the Higher Power or Universe (4). For example, we do not choose our families; we are born into them. On the other hand, destiny is an outcome we allow to manifest; we make certain decisions and choices to achieve the goals of our choosing (See: Concept: the Law of Cause and Effect).

Since we are capable of controlling or making better decisions for our destiny or future, where should we begin to have better optics or prospects?

Let’s begin with the first step of understanding thyself.
